We had a little scare. Bennett developed a fever. Trenton and I had been congested so he easily could have caught our snotty mess. We just don't know. Anyways, Bennett woke at 5:30 one morning burning up. It provoked to take his temp. 102.5! That is high for an infant. I stripped him down to his diaper and put him in a onesies instead of his footed pjs. When 7:30 rolled around, we call the doctor's office. Since he was 6 wks old, they wanted to see him, even if it could be just a cold. Bennett had been acting fine luckily and wasn't too affected by the illness. Thankfully, Trenton had been at my parents for his weekly sleepover so I could tend to Bennett that day. To make a long story short, the doctor swabbed for the flu, strep and RSV. Luckily, everything was negative. But then after speaking with the ER doctor on call, they wanted us to go to the ER for further testing. This is protocol with a child under 3 months. At the ER Bennett was poked for blood. It was so hard to work with those little veins! The sugar water kept him at ease and from crying. He did not like the catheter for a urine sample one bit, though. He was a hollering! They also took an x-ray of his chest. All results did not show an infection. We were thrilled because if his white blood cells count had shown he was fighting an infection, he would have been admitted into the hospital right then. Plus, on a child that young they have to give a spinal for the antibiotics.
Verdict-Both Bennett's pediatrician and the ER doctor said he had a red ear so it could be the onset of an ear infection causing the spike in his temperature. We were told to follow up at the ped office the following day. However, there was never a temp again after those initial 12 hrs and the ear did not look infected the next day. The diagnosis was probably just a viral cold that caused a rise in his temperature. Thank God for a good outcome!
